Race #5 Borlänge 17th and 18th september 2016

So after Skövde we only had Borlänge left, this was to be the last race meet of the year - on Friday afternoon - We got picked up from school by dad in Grandad Kent´s Karmann gypsy, we loaned a trailer from our super nice friends at Minicars and dad had the whole lot packed - so we were off!

All packed and ready for the weekend, the weather looked good!

The points now stood in the Junior A series with Travis in 2nd place with 161 points - and now in first place was now William with 170 points.

This meant for Travis to win the championship he would need to come first in both of the last races netting the full 50 points on offer.
This was a quite a tall order as we were heading to the home track of the leader of the series, It didn't faze us too much, as despite this being our 1st year racing at any of the tracks, Travis been the fastest rider, winning everyone of the first 6 races.
We just hoped for good weather and no problems for the last 2 races.

We got to the track on Friday night - Most of the regulars were already there, Dad soon found a place to park and while he set up the camper and bikes, we went to take a look and check out the track.

marking new lines on the start line...?
Saturday arrived and it was to be our first try around the Borlänge track. It was different set up to the programs we had been used to - now we would have 3 practice sessions of 15 minutes and then a qualifying and then a first race. Up until now we had been able to practice on some Friday evenings, always all day Saturday practicing and then Sunday was normally more practice, followed by qualifying and then two races.

So for some reason the schedule was different at Borlange - which meant we had less time to get to know the track. This was not so good for us, but played into the hands of the series leader who Travis was up against for the championship title.

Saturday

First practice got off to a bad start, Travis missed the entire session due to us having a bad mix of acrylate and two stroke oil, the bike didn't start? was this the problem we had back in Skövde?
Lars Åke and Thomas Westman came to our aid and helped us out with the diagnosis - split fuel and oil! so dad drained both bikes and borrowed some fuel (thanks Thomas !) we got it all cleaned up and we both managed to join the 2nd practice just in the nick of time.
look at the state of that fuel!

Practice 2 and Boom - straight off the bat Travis quickly found fast pace and posted the fastest lap of all Junior A´s as 58.399 making him fastest -Awesome stuff for his first ever 8 laps around the track.

Practice 3 we went with the same set up, running a 62 rear sprocket, This time William went slightly quicker with a 56.875 - Travis made his quickest with a 57.308. Lewis´s bike snapped the pull starter as he was about to go out! So dad was busy, flying about trying to get it fixed and managed to fix it pretty quick which meant Lewis got a few laps in that session. William´s bike noticeably blasted down the straights and Travis was getting left behind as soon as a straight came - so he was left making all his time up through the twisty section and making up a lot in the corners - it was very cool to see the determination and racing spirit.

During this session Travis came down the main straight, got caught up with 3 weaving slower riders and had to take diverting action, on to the grass at full chat and crashing on the wet grass, He was very close to hitting the tires, Thank god he didn't! it would have been a fast impact, luckily he had no injuries, the bike suffered just bent clip-on´s and we soon had it all straitened out. No need to point any fingers but sometimes I wish race control would guide the younger riders more during the practice sessions, these things happen however and Travis did an extremely good job at avoiding a much worse out come for the other riders.

So after that we were still feeling like we were on the back foot and needed to try and get a better match of speed with Williams bike,  despite others telling us that there was no point in trying to match the performance of the fastest bike as his father is "awesome at tuning" well we don't give a toss about that, we are here to do what we can, so we brought some new sprockets from Åke Rydergren - we took a 61 and a 63 not knowing which way we should go?
we had a couple of hours now until the race, so we decided to bung in the 63 for qualification after taking some advice from Thomas in regards to minimotos and types of tracks - he explained that in a track like this acceleration out of the corners was probably our best hope and to forget about the top speed down the long straights.

So we tried this new sprocket in qualifying 1 on Saturday afternoon and Travis liked the change and posted his quickest lap of 57.156 during his last lap, William posted a 56.032 in the same session putting him on pole and Travis in 2nd - It was going to be an exciting 1st race of the weekend.

Lewis doing what lewis does - always happy regardless of position and having a fun weekend with his mates.
Travis lucky #7 Barry sheen colors

Me and dad talked about the bike and we both decided after qualifying to try a jump up again and so we were soon knocking at the door of Rydergren racing and buying a 65 sprocket. we banged it in for the race and hoped that we would go the way we needed.

So
 Race one went off!

Lewis and Ian having some fun pre-race.

The race started - William left everyone of the line, Travis was off the line and in second place but definitely in hot pursuit, he was followed by Alicia, by the 2nd lap Travis had caught up and was hot on his tail through the twisty sections and looking for a place to overtake, but on every straight William just took off, Travis kept coming back and by about lap 5 he found a place and did a nice pass, then the straight came and William blasted by then Travis took him again at the next corner and made it stick a little longer until William came back along side him down the back straight but Travis held the speed late into the corner and kept the lead all the way around the final corner, he came out onto the straight ran the bike wide out to keep the speed and momentum and then straightened up into the middle of the track and just held the lead to the checkered flag and took the win by 0.179 !!! William took 2nd and Alicia took 3rd - Lewis came home in 8th.

what a race !!!!!

Dad was jumping with joy and was congratulating me as I came in after the slow down lap - it was Awesome. we couldn't believe it, despite the quicker bike Travis did the impossible and got the win.

We were all very happy, now we could look at the final race, He was still right there in the fight to take the championship - Lewis came in and was grinning form ear to ear and the first thing he asked was if Travis had won, he was so happy to hear his big bro did it.

But as we parked up the bikes, an announcement came over the speakers - something along the lines of " could junior A riders Travis Rooker and William Tagtlund come to race control" ?

So we went up to find out what was going on ?

It turned out that Williams dad though that Travis had deliberately got in front of William and slowed him down out of the last corner and into the final straight or not let him pass or weaved in front of him or something like that. So he complained to race control directly after the race and we had to all go and see them. Race control looked to be a little embarrassed about dragging us up there so they told us about the amount of changes you can do out of a corner. We asked what was going to happen and they said that they didn't think there was a problem with how Travis rode and nothing would be done. Of course being called up to race control made Travis feel like he had done something wrong and it did take away the happiness of the win in the process. we took note of the situation, we understood what was going on.

 Travis on the top

We packed up the Karmann gypsy and took a ride into town and had some Pizza

SUNDAY

After a crazy night in the camper, with Lewis falling out of the bunk bed in the middle of the night we got preparing for the Sunday and Last race of the season !

Qualifying went really well - Travis took the fastest time and put his bike on Pole position for the last race - Result ! Lewis was at the back but in fine form - So then it was some waiting around until the final....

Nerves ! getting ready for race 2.

The warm up lap went well for all, Travis put his bike on pole and all the junior A racers were excitedly revving their bikes, meanwhile Lewis's bike had stopped! but with a little help he soon had it running again and then the flag dropped.
The race was on, everyone was cheering and watching - William sped off the line just like the first race, Travis followed in 2nd despite the pole position, just like the first race Travis took chunks out in the corners and William blasted away in the straights and because of the issues in race 1 we had talked and decided that it might be a good idea if he tried to over take earlier in the final race to avoid a repeat protest, So Travis was on it hunting down and many times he was on Williams back wheel during the first 3 laps waiting for a place to pass, then on lap 4 he made his move and tried a difficult tight line up the inside on a left handed hairpin bend, he went in to hot, had to hit the brakes to avoid collision and stood the bike up but crashed as the bike became all crossed up, he slid down and was up fast and remained in 2nd place with Alicia now right behind him,  but too much time was lost to come back again and despite racing the wheels of his bike and closing down on William again it was now all over - William took the win and his father and family were very happy.  Travis came in and was devastated, he had tried so hard and just missed out on the championship, it took a good hour until dad could remove his helmet. After another hour he was OK and moving on. we had to keep telling him that he had done amazingly well !

Awesome racing form Alicia 3rd Travis 2nd and William with the Win and overall total points champion

Jonna, Ian and lewis - Junior A racers

Heading home - an awesome win and a second for Travis

So that was that, Travis was 2nd in the Swedish championship! what a result in his first season and  our Lewis had gone from strength to strength during the year - Rooker racing was heading home and we all had smiles on our faces. It was such a great season, we loved it all, the ups and downs and we all learned so much, we have a huge collection of Trophies at home now and with each one is a whole bunch of great memories, we have been bitten and now we cant wait for 2017 for more .

Race #4 Skövde

The week running up was the start of the problems, a crazy busy week and on top of that Dad had to fly over to the UK for the funeral of our great grandmother Ruby who passed away just two weeks before, a sad time for the family.

The bikes were loaded up on Thursday night - and the week prior Lewis GRC had been treated to a good going over, cleaned up and seemed to be in good shape....

Friday after school everything was in place and we went directly from school to garage, changed to the pumpkin and headed on to Skövde.
On route we were trying to get supplies for the weekend and fuel for the bikes, but a lot of places were closed on a Friday night -welcome to rural Sweden!

We arrived at the track at around 8 pm after a 4 hour drive.
We set up camp and looked forward to the weekend, no practice on Friday, we checked the weather and were a little concerned that it might rain in race day Sunday

Practice and qualifying went really well on Saturday, the weather was great and the times were good. Lewis picking up the pace with each Practice and Travis taking the fastest times in Junior A - It was looking good for Rooker racing....

We headed to the local swimming pool on Saturday evening to clean up and have a swim around and slide the flumes, then took dinner at Olearys.

SATURDAY night we messed with the RC plane, car and quad copter, then tucked in the combi-camp and had another chilly night . we were freezing!

Sunday - Morning . we woke up to misty and cold day, with clouds and a big chance of rain.

Junior A was out first as usual, 8am practice - It was dry and despite continued problems with lewis´s grc we had a good session.

Then just a minute before the 1st race the rain started to fall, at first we thought it would be ok, then it began getting harder, Åke called a wet race and gave us 10 minutes to change to wet tires, it was a panic, dad trying hard to fix the wet weather tires on to Travis´s bike, Lewis had to ride with what he had, there was no time for anything else,
The front wheel went in with almost no issues, by now there was only 5 minutes to start time, juggling two riders and two bikes was frantic, soon Lars Åke was over and giving dad a hand as he could see the frantic condition dad was in! The rest of the riders were out and still they were trying to get the rear wet wheel to go into the DM, after a lot of messing with changing hubs, sprockets and brake discs it was in, but by now the group had warmed up and were on the grid! Travis went out visibly upset,  Lewis tried to make it our but the bike was refusing to start despite the help from Omar (dad to Ian - Junior a racer) so now we had lewis out and Travis about to start form the pits, what a mess and stress!
The race started and Travis joined after the had all passed, he sped off, 1st time on wets and riding in rain, he started to pick them off and then slid of pushing too hard at a left hander, it was all too much, upset at the situation he came in to the pits, Race was over - he was extremely upset and headed to the bus, helmet on and raging! Lewis meanwhile was as usual in good spirits. Dad was a bit pissed off too!

race #1 lewis DNS Travis DNF what a f#*king mess !

It took half an hour for the anger to simmer down, then we could talk

we came to a conclusion... we need to have wet tires ready to fit on both bikes and to be able to do it in under 10 minutes....
YEAH that does sound impossible right !

A letter to Svemo is totally on the cards regarding these unreasonable rules regarding times to change to wets - it seems they don't take in to account a situation such as ours - when you are a single parent that has two young riders in the same junior class ? Do they want more riders to compete in the Junior class? do they want a good safety record? If the answer is yes to these two questions then they need a rethink. We were robbed !

Dad tried to cool his anger and set about focusing on trying to get lewis´s bike running, but to no avail, the bike wouldn't start and finally locked up - we think the piston ring broke and jammed in the cylinder. (later we found out it was just the starter)

Race 2 - all to play for!

Lewis was out of the race because we couldn't get the bike to run, so we concentrated on getting Travis ready for the race, filled up fuel, checked the wheels were in place and in line, tightened bolts, checked the hubs bolts etc etc  - everything was in good order, well it seemed so.

5 minutes before the race we warmed the bike up, all good, Travis had got over the 1st race disaster and was looking forward to racing again, even more determined,  the rain was still coming down. He got out to the start line with everyone else this time, did a sighting lap, and was at the grid in the pole position that he earned the day before.

The flag dropped and the race began, almost immediately you could see he didn't have the pace? what was going on? soon the others came by, one by one, his bike was faltering? but why ? and then the seasoned mini-moto dads in the pits told me!

"THE BIKES TAKING IN WATER"
"THE AIR FILTER IS GETTING SWAMPED" !

 F?%K !!!

what a shame, it was hell watching him ride around just getting slower and slower, after a few laps of poor running he came into the pits, crying, upset and frustrated - he knew the race was lost now, William had stormed away like it was a dry race and we had learned another very costly mistake, all too late... Travis went back out and nursed the poor bike to a 5th place and at least salvaged some points, but what a shame... when the race ended he was so upset and inconsolable for at least 20 mins he was fuming in the pumpkin.

we heard sympathetic phrases like  "you cant win them all" "that's racing" but really we didn't want to hear it, we lost and f?%ked up big time, it was a disaster.....

We packed up, and tried to figure it out..... but we were gutted... except Lewis who made us all laugh at his take on things, Lewis has a big heart and is the funny man that you all need in times like these, comments like " I could have gone faster then you Travis" lightened the mood in a way only Lewis can do.

We waited for the awards, Travis congratulated William on his victories and was reminded by him that he had just become the leader in the championship, I admired the way Travis took it, I could see the reserved nature and the way this was just making him stronger.

We said our good byes and quite quickly got going and headed home, by the time we got home some 5 hours later we had accepted it all and the smiles were back on our faces, we might even start to laugh about  this soon...

so we began planning the final meeting, what we would do differently, we will have the tires ready, we will have the plastic airboxes ready and we will have a way of changing both bikes to wet weather in under 10 minutes, its all down to the final round, lets see what happens in Borlange .....

"in the words of chumbawamba - you get knocked down you get up again"
top 3 bikes getting checked out

post race thoughts - what the hell happened !

The Junior A´s congrats to the Double Winner William

What a buzz - race weekend number 3

We had the bikes packed up and we were on the road by Friday afternoon - the weather looked to be good for the whole weekend and we were all looking forward to the weekend - it was only about an hour and a half to drive enjoying the best of queen as we trundled south to the track.
Well it was another nice weekend, Rooker racing got ready like usual, bikes were prepped and we headed down for the weekend, Just a couple of hours drive and we were there on Friday night.

We found a pitch and set up shop, Hammock, combi-camp, syncro.

no practice on Friday night - just chill and wait for Saturday practice
Travis on pace
Lewis finding his speed too

what a champ ! Travis after taking the 2nd win of the weekend!!!
Rooker bros, with the trophies

This is how hard Travis tries when he races - on the limit! A well deserved double win! coming home way in front of the 2nd place rider William.

Lewis came in second from last in both races ! a result for him and really made him feel good that he wasn't the slowest rider in the race.

The weather was good all weekend, we didn't have to delve into wet weather racing which was a relief, although the rain did come down for the senior races .
We packed up after the awards and headed home very happy - Next race Skövde....

RM Minimoto race #2 Kalmar 15-17th July

Round 2 was to be held in Kalmar ! we were racing away at a new circuit that we had never ridden before - Exciting !

The bikes were ready, we even finally had a set of wet weather tires on rims, should the weather be bad, the week up to the race we checked the weather by the hour - it didn't look too good....

We set off for the 5 hour journey on Thursday, the pumpkin was loaded up and towing the combi-camp, all went well and we arrived at the circuit on Thursday evening - Nearly all the other teams and racers were there and practice was in full swing despite the big black clouds over head.

We set up the combi-camp in a few minuets and unloaded the bikes, fuelled them up, and paid up for a practice that evening just to get a feel for the track. Travis came in after a few laps saying that he thought the track was brilliant !

Then the clouds broke and rain began to fall, we dashed the bikes in, removed the leathers and decided to call it enough, headed up to the local area to buy pizza.

We had the rain sending us to sleep as it tapped away at the canvas over head, the next morning we woke to a wet track, we decided to shoot into town and go swimming for the morning and hoped that it would al dry out while we were away,

and it did exactly that, we returned on friday afternoon to a dry track, so we shot in to the practice slots and got a few more laps in, during the practice we both had some spills, but nothing too bad, just a few jobs to keep dad busy with repairs.

First qualifying went really well, then a few crashes for Travis on the end of straight right hander, into the run off and sand, pushing too hard ! all was not lost though as despite this Travis still took the pole and best time.

Lewis keeping it steady
 Travis flying
Lewis napping just minutes before the first race
and so Saturday afternoon it was time for race 1
William got off to a blistering start, Travis followed in 2nd
Slowly reeling him in
The gap down the long straight
Through the twisties
closing him down
 Lap 4
 Lap 5

Then the battle, it was epic, Travis overtaking, then William fighting back and so forth

Then into the lead and away - and taking the flag !
It was such a great little race, really nice battles with some great overtaking moves, the weather was perfect and everyone had a good day -Travis also did his best time of the weekend during this race!

Lewis came in last place, but had a real good ride with no drama - he can go much quicker, were just waiting to find out when...

Nice to hear this 4 stroke mini moto mixing it up
 Lewis coming into the pits
 Lewis receiving his medal

The junior A guys and girls
 And the winners
After that it was time to chill and watch the others

 super moto

Our camp - flying the union
Dad the mechanic taking a break

Then we headed into Kalmar to grab a bite and see some sights

Sunday was a full on race day, Junior started early with a 15 min practice and race 2 at 10.05 - in between we watched the other mini-moto races, cheered them on and witnessed the super moto racing, all very cool to see up close

 Backing it in !

So then the final race of the weekend, Dad was very nervous!
The race started a lot like the first race, William blasted away from the start, followed by Travis and then the rest of the pack, bringing up the rear was Lewis.

Travis came up close to William by the end of lap 2 and was on his tail for a couple of laps, every time the straight came, William blasted away, then on about lap 5 travis came very close in the twisty section, ran in a little hot and they both touched and came down, they were both a good 10 seconds clear of 3rd place, luckily both riders and machines were unscathed, soon they were both up and racing away again, but Travis got away quicker and now in first place, he raced the last laps so well, crossing the line and taking the win and all with a really twisted left bar - he straight away said sorry to William for the knock. Lewis came in 8th again, we parked the bikes in the parc ferme and headed back to the pumpkin to watch the next races and congratulate Travis on the double.

This was at the checkered flag of race 2 on Sunday
